Every treatment plan at a reputable drug rehab center includes a phase that’s known as aftercare. This is the terminology used to describe helping people in recovery reintegrate into society, taking steps to minimize the chances of falling into addiction again, and helping clients actualize their life goals. Some after-care considerations include teaching those in recovery to live a structured, healthy life, form new, constructive habits to replace negative ones, hold down a job, exercise, eat healthily, practice proper sleep hygiene, forming and maintaining healthy relationships while distancing from negative influences, and removing themselves from situations, places, or people who may cause a relapse.

Sober Activities

One of the biggest concerns of people who have become sober and are about to re-enter society is “What can I do to have fun?” For those in recovery, recreational activities in the past almost always centered around using drugs or alcohol. Although they may have come clean, many of their friends and family members still spend a considerable amount of socializing time using different substances or hanging out at the bar. While for some people, being at the bar is okay, for others- specifically people who have just recently become sober- it can trigger a fatal relapse. As a result, former addicts need to find new, fun sober activities to practice during downtime. It may surprise some, but there are many fun things to do that don't involve drinking!

What Do Sober People Do For Fun?

Sober fun activities ideally provide a healthy outlet, an opportunity to socialize with new people and help you self-actualize in a productive and positive way. There are many sober things to do in your neighborhood; you just have to get creative and do your research. One added perk of socializing while sober is that you get to remember the events of the party the next day!

Top Ten Sober Activities

Here are some ideas of fun, sober things to do on a Friday night or any weekday night, including sober activities for couples instead of partying:

  1. Learn something new:
You can sign up for an online or in-person course to learn art, photography, dancing, or anything else that interests you. You can socialize with new people, look forward to the structure of classes, and even make a career switch to something you enjoy doing.
  2. Take up a hobby:
You may be surprised to learn that you enjoy knitting, gardening, pottery, journaling, or playing an instrument. You can re-engage in activities you used to enjoy before addiction and discover new hobbies you may enjoy, too.
  3. Exercise:
Whether you prefer an outdoor jog or a visit to the gym, exercising releases dopamine that provides a natural ‘high’ feeling. It helps you feel energized, fit, and happy, making it a perfect choice of activity when you’re looking for a high.
  4. Practice a sport:
From volleyball to tennis and swimming to skiing, find a sport you enjoy. You can join a sports league or coaching team and learn to become a pro. It also allows you to spend time outdoors, which helps you sleep better, have a healthier appetite, as well as reduce symptoms of depression.
  5. Volunteer:
Giving back to your community is an excellent and natural means of bringing up feelings of happiness and fulfillment. Think about what kind of activities you enjoy and find a way to contribute to your community through your favorite activities.
  6. Plan a trip:
You could go bowling, play golf, go for a hike, or visit a museum of interest. If you previously enjoyed frequenting bars or nightclubs, you could find a sober bar or club in your area to visit instead, where you can hang out with sober people while doing things you enjoy.
  7. Watch a movie:
You can visit a cinema as a couple or with friends, or you can pop some popcorn and watch a movie in the comfort of your home. You could also go to the theater or a concert if those interest you more.
  8. Go shopping:
Whether you prefer shopping online or visiting the stores in person, enjoy trying on things you love, regardless of whether or not you can afford to actually purchase it.
  9. Travel:
Now’s the time to visit all the places on your bucket list. You could do some local touring of your neighborhood or venture out to places you’ve always wanted to see with your spouse/partner or some sober friends.
  10. Host a club:
Find some sober friends who share your interests and host a weekly or bi-weekly club. From book clubs, art clubs, and board game clubs to seasonal get-togethers like Thanksgiving dinner or a one-time competition, it’s always great to have a sober party with friends.

Conclusion

At first, it’s tough to imagine that the previous activities you enjoyed may not be an option anymore if you’d like to stay sober. You may feel as though it isn’t worth the effort if you’ll never be able to socialize with the people you love, in the places you enjoy, as you did before you attended rehab.

But as our many successful patients can attest, there are so many sober activities for adults that you will come to enjoy with time. Discover new dimensions of yourself and your spouse/partner, make new friends, and find activities that you never knew you loved. Get out there and have fun!
