In the world of substance abuse, users are always looking for new drugs or combinations of drugs to achieve the euphoric ‘high’ that is so addictive. There are countless rare drugs out there, some more readily available and widely abused than others.

In this article, we will list uncommon drugs you may never have heard of before, leaving you unaware of their risks. The most rare drugs are usually difficult to obtain, but that doesn’t make them any less deadly than more well known drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and MDMA.

Drugs You've Never Heard Of

There are many uncommon drugs that you may have never heard of, often circulating in underground markets or specific communities. While these substances may not be as widely recognized, they can be extremely dangerous. Their use is often glamorized, but the risks, including unpredictable potency and severe health consequences, are significant. Below is a list of some rare illegal drugs, their street names, and the risks associated with using them.

Rare Illegal Drug #1: Foxy Methoxy

Foxy Methoxy is a synthetic drug shortened from 5-methoxy-N, N disopropyltryptamine (5-MeO-DIPT). It is classified as a tryptamine and has hallucinogenic properties. Foxy Methoxy has been classified by the DEA as a Schedule I drug, which means that it has a high potential for abuse and addiction, with no known medicinal or healing properties. In other words, it’s purely a dangerous, recreational drug, and is illegal in the United States. People who sell, distribute, or use this drug can face serious legal charges.

Foxy Methoxy is usually produced as a tablet with a spider engraved on one side, a powder, or a capsule with powder inside. It is used mostly among teenagers and young adults at nightclubs, parties, and other social events, and is either consumed orally, snorted, or injected into the bloodstream.

As a hallucinogenic drug, Foxy Methoxy can cause users to see, feel, hear, and experience things that are not there in reality. Chronic users may suffer from nausea, vomiting, dilated pupils, diarrhea, and psychological effects such as anxiety and depression. In the long term, Foxy Methoxy can cause deafness or hearing loss, and lethal effects when combined with other drugs.

Rare Illegal Drug #2: Dragonfly

Dragonfly is also known as Bromo-DragonFLY or B-DFLY. It is a synthetic hallucinogenic drug and is considered one of the most dangerous drugs on the black market because of its unusually high potency.

Dragonfly earned its name because its chemical structure resembles the shape of the insect. It is generally sold as a white powder but can be found in other colors when mixed with other substances. The drug is ingested orally as a powder, liquid, or blotter paper.

Dragonfly is so potent that its effects can be felt for up to 2-3 days after the last dose. However, because it may take up to 6 hours for the effects to kick in, uneducated users may repeat the dose several times, greatly increasing the chances of a lethal overdose.

When under the effects of the drug, users feel disassociated from their bodies, euphoric, and unusually empathetic toward others. At the same time, they may experience adverse effects like nausea, muscle spasms, diarrhea, increased or stopped heart rate, seizures, terror-inducing hallucinations, and even death.

Dragonfly is also a vasoconstrictor, which means that it causes the blood vessels in the body to constrict. This can lead to particularly gruesome effects like tissue necrosis (death of a large amount of body cells, causing decay), gangrene, and the need for amputation.

Rare Illegal Drug #3: Benzo Fury

Benzo Fury is a stimulant sold in colored pellets, white powder, or colored capsules. It is known on the street as White Pearl, 5-Apb, 5-Apdb, 6-Apb, and 6-Apdb. The effects of the drug are similar to those of ecstasy and speed, which cause the user to feel energized, alert, euphoric, and unusually affectionate towards everyone around them.

Some of the adverse physical effects of Benzo Fury include dilated pupils, increased blood pressure, elevated heart rate, insomnia, raised body temperature, tightened jaw muscles, lethargy, and irritability. In the long term, there has been some evidence of heart damage.

Users may also experience mental health challenges like anxiety, aggression, agitation, confusion, panic attacks, and paranoia. Benzo fury can also produce potent hallucinogenic effects. The effects of Benzo Fury can last for up to 14 hours, during which users are at risk of engaging in self-harm.

To avoid detection, Benzo Fury is sold with a label ‘not for human consumption.’ This makes it easier for drug dealers to buy, sell, and distribute the dangerous drug under the nose of the authorities without repercussions.

Rare Illegal Drug #4: Scopolamine

Also known as Devil’s Breath, Scopolamine Datura, or Hyoscine, this drug causes users to enter a “zombie state”. People who use Scopolamine report experiencing memory loss, extreme docility, and a lack of free will. It can also cause users to fall unconscious for up to 24 hours.

Because of its ability to cause docility and memory loss, Scopolamine is a popular crime aid, including for date-rape and robbery. It is a powder derived from the Borrachero tree that grows in Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. The roots and flowers of the tree are often ground and brewed in tea.

In small doses, scopolamine has medicinal uses, such as treating motion sickness and nausea, but can be fatal in greater doses. There have been many cases of overdose caused by people seeking a disorientated, dream-like, relaxed state.

Rare Illegal Drug #5: Khat

Derived from a plant in the Middle East, Khat is used to create synthetic cathinones or “bath salts”. In the Middle East, the drug is ingested freely to help users increase performance and focus, feel more awake and alert, and boost energy levels.

It is also known as Qat, Quaad, or Arabian Tea, and the leaves are chewed or consumed in liquid form. There is a belief that Khat causes terrorism because it makes users feel invincible, giving them the courage to perform acts of terror. Some terrorist groups benefit financially from the sale and distribution of the drug.

People who use Khat  experience physical effects such as hyperactivity, high blood pressure, insomnia, and, in more extreme cases, bleeding of the brain, lung issues, lung damage, heart attack, and changes to blood vessels. It also causes mental challenges like aggressiveness, anxiety, paranoia, depression, mood swings, mania, and psychosis.

Rare Illegal Drug #6: Krokodil

Also called Krok, Poor Man’s Heroin, and Crocodile, this opioid’s active ingredient is dorsomorphin, a more potent and synthetic derivative of morphine. It earned the name ‘Poor Man’s Heroin’ because it is a cheaper (and deadlier) alternative to heroin.

Krokodil is known to be a ‘flesh-eating drug’ because it causes the flesh to rot away, and the internal organs to erode, which is visible from the grotesque disfigurement of the body. The area of injection of the drug becomes leathery, ripped, and scale-like, mimicking the texture and appearance of crocodile skin.

Krokodil is a toxic mixture of paint thinners, red phosphorus, codeine, hydrochloric acid, and other harmful substances. It is considered one of the deadliest drugs in the world, with horrific side effects and long-term damage.

Rare Illegal Drug #7: Wet

Phencyclidine is the scientific name for Wet, PCP, or Angel Dust, a substance that cigarettes and marijuana joints are dipped into before being smoked. It is a stimulant and hallucinogenic drug which both activates the CNS (Central Nervous System) to provide a boost of energy, and disassociates the brain from the body.

Wet is produced as a liquid, in crystal form, as a powder, oil, and pill. Wet users are detached from reality when under the influence and can experience hallucinations, delusions, psychosis, and usually exhibit violent behavior.

Wet users may feel upbeat, excited, euphoric, and energized, but can also experience paranoia, panic, and aggression. They lose their control, physical coordination, and state of mind, causing them to act in uncharacteristic ways.

In large doses, Wet can lead to bodily convulsions, slow and shallow breathing, self-harm, suicide, extreme violence toward others, and death. Long-term mental health risks of Wet include cognitive decline, memory issues, depression, and irreversible paranoia.
