A special event in Virginia Beach is making strides to raise both money and awareness for the mental health of veterans, an issue that continues to affect thousands of service members each year. Craig Colucci, the owner of D-BAT Virginia Beach, is hosting a Veteran’s Hit-a-thon with the goal of collecting 6,400 hits—each one representing a veteran who takes their life each year due to mental health struggles. This heartfelt event seeks not only to honor veterans but to support them through a fundraising effort benefiting the Jones & Cabacoy Veterans Care Center in Virginia Beach.

The event, taking place on Saturday, November 9, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., will gather participants to hit baseballs in hopes of reaching the goal of 6,400 hits. But the goal extends beyond just hitting balls. According to the 3 WTKR news site, organizers hope to raise $45,000 for the Jones & Cabacoy Veterans Care Center, which will be used to fund a new sensory room to help veterans with mental health needs. The sensory room is intended to provide veterans with a calming space designed to help them manage stress, anxiety, and other challenges that may arise as they transition back to civilian life.

Generous donations have already begun pouring in to support the cause. Ross Windfield of Frieden Agency and Frieden Wealth Management has pledged $10,000 toward the effort, reinforcing the importance of supporting local veterans and helping organizations like Jones & Cabacoy, which provides crucial services to veterans who may not have access to the resources they need. "I just want to really give back to the veterans and help the local organization, Jones & Cabacoy. I think they are doing good things for those veterans who didn’t have a place to go or really needed some help, and this gives them that," Windfield said.

The event will be held at D-BAT Virginia Beach, located at 5258 Fairfield Shopping Centre, where participants can show their support by either signing up to hit or simply attending to cheer on the participants. To sign up for the event and make a difference, participants can visit D-BAT’s website for more information.

By supporting this hit-a-thon, the community will not only help raise funds for the Jones & Cabacoy Veterans Care Center but also bring much-needed attention to the mental health challenges faced by many veterans. This initiative is part of a broader effort to create spaces and resources that help veterans lead fulfilling lives after service, offering them the support they deserve.
