In a major drug bust, East Baton Rouge deputies arrested two men on December 4, 2024, after an extensive investigation led to the seizure of large quantities of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and other drugs. The arrests followed hours of surveillance and resulted in the discovery of over 500 lethal doses of fentanyl, among other illegal substances.
The Brproud news site reported that the investigation targeted two Baton Rouge homes and two vehicles. Michael Ferguson, 34, and Trejon Hughes, 28, were taken into custody after law enforcement officers conducted the searches. In total, agents seized a staggering array of items linked to drug distribution, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, and several other drugs.
The drugs found during the search included:
In addition to the drugs, deputies found equipment commonly used in drug trafficking and manufacturing, including a blender (which tested positive for fentanyl), hydraulic narcotics presses, two vacuum sealers, digital scales, contamination masks, and a narcotics cutting agent. Law enforcement also seized over $20,000 in cash and four firearms, one of which had been reported stolen from Livingston Parish.
Both Ferguson and Hughes were charged with multiple drug-related offenses. Hughes faces charges including distribution and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, tapentadol, and oxycodone. He also faces charges for operating a clandestine lab, possession of firearms by a felon, possession of stolen firearms, and other related charges. Hughes, who has a criminal history including convictions for attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery, faces significant legal consequences.
Ferguson, likewise, faces multiple charges related to the possession and distribution of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine. He is also charged with possession of stolen property and firearms with controlled dangerous substances (CDS).
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the drug epidemic in Baton Rouge, where fentanyl and other opioids continue to pose significant threats to public health. The discovery of a clandestine drug manufacturing operation underscores the dangerous level of sophistication involved in some illegal drug distribution networks.
As authorities continue to investigate, both men remain in custody, and further charges may be forthcoming. This bust serves as a reminder of the persistent challenges law enforcement faces in tackling the opioid crisis and drug-related crime in communities across Louisiana.
The case also highlights the dangerous combination of fentanyl, firearms, and drug trafficking in Baton Rouge, a city already struggling with the impact of drug abuse and overdose deaths. Law enforcement officials encourage anyone with information related to drug trafficking or other criminal activities to come forward to assist in these investigations.
