A routine traffic stop in Kokomo, Indiana, has uncovered what authorities are calling a major drug distribution operation and resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of illegal substances and firearms. The incident unfolded on the evening of December 6, 2024, when a Howard County Sheriff’s deputy pulled over a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Malachi Peters after observing him run a red light and narrowly avoid a collision.

What started as a routine traffic stop soon escalated into a much larger investigation when Peters told the deputy that he had just discovered his home had been burglarized. According to WISHTV, Peters claimed he had left in a hurry to confront the situation and had not yet contacted law enforcement. In response, the deputy proceeded to check the residence for signs of a break-in. Upon arrival, the deputy noted forced entry into the home and smelled marijuana, prompting further investigation.

A safety sweep of the house revealed additional suspicious signs of drug activity, leading to a search warrant. When authorities executed the search, the scale of the operation quickly became apparent. Among the items seized were approximately 397 grams of psychedelic mushrooms, several firearms—including a Glock 43X handgun, a Maverick 12-gauge shotgun, and a Diamondback AR-15 rifle—and over $1,600 in cash.

The authorities also uncovered a staggering inventory of drugs and paraphernalia associated with drug distribution. This included over 240 THC vape cartridges, various edibles, and hash oil products, as well as the necessary packaging materials and scales used for drug trafficking. The sheer volume of drugs and the variety of substances seized indicate a well-established illegal operation centered around marijuana, THC derivatives, and psychedelic substances.

Peters was arrested and charged with multiple serious offenses, including Dealing in a Schedule I Controlled Substance, Dealing in Marijuana, and Possession of Marijuana with a Prior Conviction. He was also charged with possession of psychedelic substances, a Class A Misdemeanor. After posting bond, Peters was released and is now awaiting trial.

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office is calling for any additional information on the case, asking local residents to come forward if they have knowledge of the operation or any other related details. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding drug trafficking and illegal firearms in communities across Indiana.

For now, local law enforcement is continuing to monitor the situation and urges anyone with information to reach out to Deputy Jeremiah Jackson at the Howard County Sheriff’s Office. The significant haul of weapons and drugs seized in this case underscores the importance of vigilant policing and community involvement in tackling criminal activity.
