A new mental health and substance abuse crisis center, along with a mobile unit, will soon be available to residents within a 60-mile radius of Richmond, offering much-needed, immediate care. Centerstone, a nonprofit health system that specializes in mental health and substance use disorder treatments, will open the Stride Crisis Center and mobile unit on February 14, 2025. This new center, located at 816 Dillon Drive in Richmond, will provide 24/7 crisis services for individuals dealing with mental health challenges or substance misuse, and the mobile unit will bring those services directly to people in need, wherever they are.

According to Western Wayne News, the Stride Crisis Center is funded by a $50,000 capital grant from Indiana United Ways, part of the organization’s statewide initiative to address gaps in mental health services. The center is located just off U.S. 27 near Reid Health, at the former Quest Diagnostics lab building. The facility will provide a short-term diversion option from incarceration and will serve adults facing mental health or substance abuse crises. The mobile unit, however, will be available to all ages, offering on-the-spot crisis assessments and de-escalation anywhere within the community.

This expansion marks the third crisis center launched by Centerstone in Indiana, following the opening of similar facilities in Bloomington and Columbus. Richmond was selected due to the region’s significant gaps in mental health services and high rates of substance misuse and suicide. The Stride Crisis Center is a response to these issues, filling an essential need for accessible, 24/7 crisis care.

The new center and mobile unit are expected to begin operating on February 14, with full 24/7 services available by March 1. Local leaders, including Tamara Brinkman, president of United Way of Whitewater Valley (UWWV), have expressed strong support for the initiative, calling it a critical addition to the region’s behavioral health network. Brinkman emphasized that the center will help address the significant gap in mental health services, especially for people in immediate crisis who may not have access to other support options.

The $50,000 investment in building renovations will ensure that the Stride Crisis Center meets trauma-informed space standards, adhering to best practices outlined by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction. The center will be a Certified Community Behavioral Health Center, which means it will closely collaborate with local first responders, the state’s 988 crisis line, and healthcare providers to ensure individuals have the support they need during a crisis.

Amanda Mullins, Centerstone’s local director of adult services, highlighted the importance of community collaboration in fostering long-term recovery and praised the partnerships with United Way and other local organizations that have supported the project. "Our goal is to provide no-barrier access to essential support, helping individuals regain stability through mental health and substance use services," Mullins said. The center will offer crisis intervention, treatment, case management, and a range of community resources, including housing, food, clothing, and employment assistance.

The opening of the Stride Crisis Center and mobile unit is an important step in enhancing mental health and substance abuse support in the Richmond area. It will provide residents with immediate, around-the-clock access to crisis care, ensuring that no one in the community has to face overwhelming challenges without support. As a critical addition to the local mental health network, the center is set to make a lasting impact on the well-being of individuals and families in the region.
