In a heartfelt initiative aimed at addressing the urgent issue of Veteran mental health and suicide prevention, Face the Fight Coalition has joined forces with Starbucks to promote the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Buddy Check Week from October 21 to 25, 2024. This partnership seeks to raise awareness and provide essential support to Veterans, service members, their families, caregivers, and survivors.

Face the Fight is dedicated to combating Veteran suicide and fostering connections within the community. During this important week, the coalition will encourage individuals to take an active role in checking in with Veterans, emphasizing the significance of peer support. As part of the initiative, the first 10,000 individuals who pledge to check in with 10 Veterans during Buddy Check Week will receive a $10 Starbucks gift card, generously donated by the coffee giant. The gift cards will be sent via email on a first-come, first-served basis, with distribution expected by early November.

The Virginia News website noted that the collaboration underscores the crucial role that military and Veteran caregivers play in supporting those facing mental health challenges. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation, a strategic partner of Face the Fight, champions these caregivers who often serve as the first line of support for Veterans in need.

Leslie Jones, the Veteran and Military Engagement lead at Starbucks, expressed the company’s commitment to this cause, stating, “We believe in the power of human connection and always aim to contribute positively to the communities we serve. By working together, we can help create a supportive environment for our Veterans, their families, and those who care for them.”

In addition to the pledge and gift card initiative, Face the Fight offers a free training program titled “Face the Fight: Basics of Veteran Suicide Prevention.” This training equips participants with vital skills to support Veterans in distress, ensuring that more community members are prepared to make a meaningful difference in their lives.

The mission is clear: by fostering a culture of connection and support, we can create a robust community for all who have served in the military and those who stand by them. The collaboration between Face the Fight and Starbucks serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that individuals can have when they come together for a common cause.

If you’re interested in participating, please take the free training and consider taking the pledge to check in with Veterans during Buddy Check Week. Your involvement can help make a significant difference in someone’s life and contribute to a supportive environment for our Veterans and their families.
