Avenues Recovery, an addiction rehab center in Pennsylvania, is pleased to share that on September 12, 2024, the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) launched National Recovery Month with a vibrant day of events designed to celebrate recovery and showcase state-supported programs. The occasion brought together individuals in recovery, their families, advocacy organizations, and community members to honor the progress made by those overcoming substance use disorders (SUD).

National Recovery Month, observed each September, highlights the achievements of those living in recovery and emphasizes that recovery is an attainable reality for many. This year’s theme, “Recovery is For Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community,” underscores the inclusive nature of recovery efforts and the importance of supporting individuals through their personal journeys.

“People can and do recover from the disease of addiction, and September is a time to celebrate that journey,” said DDAP Secretary Dr. Latika Davis-Jones. She added that the Shapiro Administration is committed to promoting recovery year-round, aiming to make resources more equitable and to eliminate stigma. “We work every day to clear a path for individuals to take that first step towards wellness and remind them that no one is alone on their road to recovery.”

The Penn Watch news site reported that the kickoff event, titled “Share the Hope: A Recovery Story,” was a testament to the power of community and personal stories in the recovery process. Activities ranged from recovery yoga sessions and drum circles to origami lessons and soul line dancing, offering participants a range of wellness activities. The event also featured speakers sharing their experiences with both substance use and problem gambling disorders.

Cambria King, Senior Peer Navigator at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, emphasized the importance of flexibility in recovery approaches. “The disease of addiction isn’t about desire or just wanting to stop, and recovery isn’t always about abstinence. Sometimes, using other medications or harm reduction tools is necessary to stay safe and continue healing,” King said. “The most important thing is that we provide people with the right resources, not rigid expectations. Everyone’s path to recovery is different, and we need to ensure support is accessible for all.”

Josh Ercole, Executive Director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania (CCGP), highlighted the importance of raising awareness about gambling disorders. “This is a wonderful chance to raise awareness about the statewide helpline, 1-800-GAMBLER, and other resources, like counseling and support groups, available to those experiencing negative issues as a result of a gambling disorder. Recovery is not only possible, it’s probable – and knowing where to turn is key,” Ercole noted.

In addition to the wellness activities, the event featured tours of Driving Recovery for PA, the state’s first mobile licensed narcotic treatment program. Operated by Gaudenzia, Inc., this 37-foot mobile RV offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT), assessments, certified recovery support, counseling, harm reduction services, and connections to support services across six Pennsylvania counties.

Dr. Deja Gilbert, President and CEO of Gaudenzia, highlighted the significance of this innovative approach. “Breaking down barriers and improving access to evidence-based care is vital when we talk about supporting recovery in all communities,” said Gilbert. “Gaudenzia’s Driving Recovery for PA is our innovative approach to bringing lifesaving treatment directly into communities to help individuals who may not otherwise receive treatment.”

National Recovery Month in Pennsylvania kicked off with a clear message: recovery is achievable for everyone, and with the right support and resources, individuals and families can overcome the challenges of substance use and gambling disorders. The day’s events celebrated these efforts and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to expanding access to vital recovery services.
