Governor Glenn Youngkin’s executive order requiring schools in Virginia to notify parents of student overdoses within 24 hours is showing measurable success, with Northern Virginia reporting a significant drop in juvenile overdoses over the past year. This initiative, sparked by the tragic overdoses among students in Loudoun County in 2023, has been instrumental in raising awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and other drugs among students, parents, and educators.

The ABC 7 news site reported that one year after the overdose incidents, Loudoun County and surrounding areas are seeing more than a 70% decrease in juvenile drug overdoses. The measures set by Youngkin’s executive order, such as REVIVE training and increased availability of naloxone, have contributed to this positive trend. The governor also noted successful drug interception efforts, which have removed thousands of pounds of opioids from Virginia communities. This approach is helping Virginians better understand that even one counterfeit pill can be fatal.

Sheriff Mike Chapman, who first alerted the public to the overdoses last year, stressed the importance of maintaining a 24-hour notification policy beyond the current administration. He called for legislation to make the notification policy a permanent requirement, ensuring long-term transparency and rapid communication with parents about overdose incidents.

While some Virginia lawmakers have proposed bills to codify this notification requirement, challenges remain in reaching consensus on the specifics. Governor Youngkin and other advocates are pushing for clear, consistent standards in overdose notifications, including identifying the affected school, as Fairfax County has done. This transparency, Youngkin emphasized, enables parents to stay informed about threats in their children’s schools and reinforces parental involvement in their children's health and safety.

The governor’s commitment to parental notification and transparency reflects his broader belief that when parents are informed and involved, children thrive academically and personally. The success of this initiative may set a new standard for how schools across the country respond to the drug crisis among young people.
