The La Plata Police Department is taking significant steps to improve its response to mental health crises with the completion of Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) by Detective Sergeant David Roys and Police First Class Kenneth Harvey. The two officers recently finished the 40-hour CIT course held at the Calvert Training Center in Port Republic, Maryland, aimed at equipping law enforcement personnel with the necessary skills to engage with individuals experiencing mental health emergencies.

According to the Southern Maryland Chronicle, CIT is a nationally recognized training program that focuses on enhancing interactions between law enforcement and individuals in crisis. It provides officers, communications staff, and corrections officers with crucial tools to identify signs of mental illness and implement de-escalation techniques to help prevent situations from escalating. The program also emphasizes collaboration between law enforcement and mental health professionals, fostering more effective and compassionate responses to mental health emergencies.

The goal of CIT is to improve both community relations and safety, ensuring that individuals in crisis are treated with understanding and care while maintaining the safety of officers. By completing the training, Detective Sergeant Roys and PFC Harvey are now better equipped to navigate mental health-related situations with increased sensitivity and awareness. Their training will ultimately enhance the La Plata Police Department's ability to serve the community and provide a safer, more supportive environment for those facing mental health challenges.

The La Plata Police Department has long been committed to ensuring that its officers have the skills and knowledge needed to meet the evolving needs of the community. With a growing focus on mental health awareness, the department continues to seek out opportunities to provide its officers with the best possible training, enabling them to respond effectively and compassionately to mental health crises. Through initiatives like CIT, the La Plata Police Department is working to foster positive relationships within the community while improving its response capabilities in times of mental health emergencies.
