National Drug Take Back Day is set for October 26, offering Maryland residents a safe and responsible way to dispose of their unused or unwanted prescription medications. The event, now in its 27th edition, is part of a nationwide effort to combat opioid addiction and prevent prescription drug misuse. The Maryland State Police are once again participating, encouraging the public to drop off medications at any of the 23 state police barracks between 10am and 2pm—with no questions asked. These barracks are equipped with secure drug collection boxes, available not just on Take Back Day but year-round, 24/7, ensuring continuous access to safe disposal options.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and law enforcement agencies across the country. The biannual event is more than just a drug disposal service—it plays a crucial role in raising awareness about the risks of medication misuse and the dangers of improperly stored prescription drugs. By offering a straightforward, anonymous option for safe disposal, National Drug Take Back Day helps reduce the availability of potentially dangerous drugs in households and communities, curbing the risk of abuse and overdose.
The impact of this program in Maryland has been substantial. According to the Tri-State Alert news site, over 10,500 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs were collected at nearly 93 sites throughout the state during the last Take Back event in April. More than 2,000 pounds of those drugs were collected by the Maryland State Police, with the Centreville Barrack leading the way, gathering an impressive 695 pounds, followed by Frederick Barrack with 376 pounds.
Since the program began in 2014, Maryland State Police have helped remove nearly 31,000 pounds of prescription medications from circulation, making communities safer and helping prevent the diversion of these drugs for misuse. The largest single collection occurred in 2017, with 2,669 pounds collected statewide, underscoring the ongoing need for such initiatives.
