On September 25, 2024, the Maryland Department of Health launched a groundbreaking campaign in collaboration with the Baltimore Ravens, aimed at raising awareness about addiction, reducing stigma, and providing essential resources for those seeking help. Featuring Ravens tight end Mark Andrews, the campaign seeks to emphasize that addiction is a medical condition and that those struggling with it are not alone. Running through October 27, the initiative is also supported by Maryland Governor Moore, who honored the Ravens with a citation for their partnership in promoting behavioral health messaging.

In the wake of a pressing addiction crisis, Deputy Secretary for Behavioral Health Alyssa Lord highlighted the urgency of the campaign. “Marylanders are losing their lives to addiction and overdoses,” she said. “In addition to directly reaching out to the people who are struggling, this campaign will also reach their families, their loved ones, and their communities. This will further reduce stigma by normalizing conversations about drugs and substance use disorders and connecting everyone to available resources and support.”

The Moco Show news site noted that this campaign aims not only to educate the public but also to foster a supportive environment where discussions about addiction and recovery can take place without shame. Maryland residents are encouraged to seek help by calling or texting 988 or by visiting StopOverdose.maryland.gov for more information and support.

Ravens Chief Sales Officer Kevin Rochlitz expressed the team's commitment to improving community health through awareness and education. “We will always embrace meaningful opportunities that help improve Maryland communities through awareness, education, and advocacy,” he stated. “This vitally important campaign addresses a serious issue affecting the health and well-being of many people every day. We salute the Maryland Department of Health for its continued commitment to saving lives and driving positive change.”

The campaign's launch comes at a critical time; recent statistics reveal that in the 12 months ending in June, there were 2,030 fatal overdoses in Maryland, according to the Department’s new Overdose Data Dashboard. Fortunately, preliminary data suggests a decline in fatal overdoses in the state in recent years, underscoring the importance of ongoing awareness and intervention efforts.

The Maryland State Ad Agency, a division of Maryland Public Television, played a vital role in developing the campaign, building on previous successes. Their earlier initiative with the Baltimore Ravens and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline received an Honorable Mention in the Mental Health category at the Impact Communications Awards, showcasing the effectiveness of their collaborative efforts.

As the campaign progresses, it aims to create a culture of understanding and support for those affected by addiction in Maryland, demonstrating that recovery is possible and that help is always available. By engaging the community and leveraging the influence of the Baltimore Ravens, this initiative hopes to change perceptions, save lives, and foster a healthier future for all Marylanders.
