The state of Louisiana has taken legal action against TikTok, claiming the app is intentionally designed to be addictive to young users and exposes them to inappropriate content. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced the lawsuit, accusing the social media giant of violating consumer protection laws by engaging in unfair trade practices and false advertising. Murrill asserts that TikTok has misled the public about the volume and intensity of mature content on the platform, describing it as filled with profanity, sexual content, violence, and other mature themes.

The Nola news site reported that the lawsuit, filed in Livingston Parish’s 21st Judicial District Court, is part of a broader wave of legal actions against TikTok, with 13 other attorneys general also joining in separate lawsuits across various states. Murrill emphasizes that TikTok’s algorithm is designed to ensnare young people, encouraging endless scrolling through content that can have harmful psychological effects while generating massive profits for the platform.

The lawsuit comes as TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, faces mounting scrutiny from U.S. officials. Earlier this year, President Joe Biden signed a law that requires ByteDance to sell TikTok to a U.S. company within a specific timeframe. ByteDance is currently engaged in its own legal battles, including a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice, while also facing a federal lawsuit brought by the Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission over violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

As TikTok continues to be a popular platform among teens, this legal action could signal a turning point in how the app is regulated in the U.S., particularly around its use by young audiences.
