Chip Autin, a 41-year-old Louisiana man, is on a mission to run across the state in an effort to raise awareness about addiction recovery and celebrate his 10-year journey of overcoming meth addiction. The ambitious feat, which started at the Texarkana line and will end near Grand Isle, is a personal challenge for Autin. He aims to complete the nearly 432-mile journey in 10 days or less, setting a fastest known time record along the way.

The WBRZ news site reported that the idea for the run came to Autin in 2023, just after finishing his second 100-mile race. With his 10-year anniversary of sobriety approaching in 2024, Autin decided to combine his love for running with a powerful message of hope for others facing addiction. "I realized that my 10 years of beating a drug addiction to methamphetamine was coming up, and I thought, what better way to celebrate than running Highway 1?" Autin shared.

Autin's story is one of resilience. He began experimenting with drugs in his 20s, and by his late 20s, his life spiraled into a meth addiction. For three years, he lived in the grip of addiction, losing relationships, stability, and his sense of purpose. "I was living in a toolshed on the side of my parent's house," Autin recalled, adding that the loss of a close friend to a heroin overdose and the departure of his girlfriend and her children were the wake-up calls he needed. At his lowest, Autin even considered suicide, holding a shotgun with a single shell in a moment of despair.

But in a turning point, Autin decided to fight back. "I had this conversation with myself where I was finally ready to quit," he said. Realizing he could lose everything again if he didn’t make a change, Autin quit meth cold turkey. The withdrawal was difficult, but he found the strength to keep going. "What I got back was well worth the struggle," he said.

Throughout his recovery, running became a key part of Autin's healing process. He first discovered his love for running in high school when his father signed him up for cross country, despite his initial resistance. Although his drug use interrupted his athletic pursuits, getting back into running became a symbol of his renewed commitment to a healthy life.

The death of his father in 2015 from brain cancer was another challenge that tested Autin, but it also reinforced his determination to live a healthier life. He returned to running that year, using it as a way to cope with the grief and reclaim his well-being.

Now, as he embarks on his most challenging run yet, Autin is not only raising awareness about addiction but also supporting a local nonprofit, Seeking Action Raising Awareness and Hope (SARAH). The organization, founded in memory of Sarah Beth Pellegrin, who died of fentanyl poisoning in 2018, aims to help those affected by substance abuse. Autin hopes his run will inspire others struggling with addiction, showing them that it’s possible to turn their lives around.

Autin has taken precautions for his journey, ensuring he has a support team and a doctor to accompany him along the route. As he runs through the state, his goal is not only to finish the race but to share a message of hope and perseverance for those who may be fighting their own battles with addiction.
