Indiana residents are being cautioned by the FDA about the potential dangers associated with consuming “microdose chocolate” bars and candies following reports of illnesses linked to these products. Two Hoosiers fell ill after consuming Diamond Shruumz-brand chocolate bars, cones, and gummies.

The FDA issued a news release on Tuesday, advising consumers to avoid consuming, selling, or serving any Diamond Shruumz products as they investigate the cause of the reported illnesses. These products are available for purchase online and at various retail locations, including smoke and vape shops, and stores selling hemp-derived products. However, the complete list of retailers is currently unknown.

As of June 11, two Indiana residents reported illnesses to the FDA after consuming Diamond Shruumz products. Similar reports have been received from ten residents across Alabama, Arizona, Kentucky, Missouri, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. All twelve affected individuals sought medical care, with ten requiring hospitalization. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported.

Symptoms reported by those affected range from seizures and confusion to abnormal heart rates, nausea, and vomiting. The FDA emphasized the severity of these symptoms, which include central nervous system depression, hyper, and hypotension. Microdosing, a practice involving small amounts of psychedelic substances like psilocybin mushrooms, is the focus of Diamond Shruumz's products. Despite marketing claims that these products contain a blend of nootropic and functional mushrooms, the company asserts they do not include scheduled drugs like psilocybin or amanita.

The FDA is actively working to identify the cause of these illnesses and determine the next steps. In the meantime, they have provided several safety tips for consumers:

  • Check and Discard: Consumers should check their homes and discard any Diamond Shruumz products if found.
  • Parental Guidance: These products may appeal to children and teenagers due to their candy-like appearance. Parents and caregivers should discuss the risks with their children and ensure the products are not accessible to younger individuals.
  • Seek Medical Help: If you become ill after consuming these products, contact your healthcare provider immediately or call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222.

The FDA's investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Indiana residents and consumers nationwide are urged to remain vigilant and avoid these potentially hazardous products. For further updates and the FDA’s full release, visit their official website.

Stay safe, and always exercise caution when choosing the products you consume. Your health and safety are of utmost importance.
