The University of Indianapolis is taking a pioneering step in addressing Central Indiana's need for trauma-specialized mental health professionals. With the launch of the Behavioral Health Trauma Certificate program, UIndy is empowering mental health providers with advanced training to help survivors of trauma, focusing on issues such as complex trauma, childhood trauma, racial trauma, and the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities.
The need for such specialized care is acute. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, over 1.1 million adults in Indiana grapple with mental health conditions, while nearly one-third of residents recently reported symptoms of anxiety or depression. The statistics are equally concerning for teens, with an estimated 90,000 Indiana adolescents living with depression. This new program aims to close critical gaps in care by equipping counselors, social workers, and psychologists with the tools to effectively address trauma's profound impact.
Rachel Feldwisch, associate dean of UIndy’s College of Education and Behavioral Science, emphasized the program’s importance. “Communities need mental health providers trained to address both individual and societal trauma,” said Feldwisch. “This training can make a huge difference, particularly for children and teens who have experienced abuse or other traumatic events.”
The Behavioral Health Trauma Certificate includes three nine-credit courses—Trauma Counseling, Resilience and Growth in Marginalized Communities, and Adverse Childhood Experiences and Trauma. Open to both current UIndy students and external applicants, the program is accessible to individuals with a bachelor’s degree and relevant graduate coursework in counseling or social work. Applications are open for the spring term until Dec. 5, with additional opportunities in summer and fall.
Community members may also apply for grants covering tuition through the Indianapolis Urban League, with priority for those from underserved backgrounds. Feldwisch highlighted the long-term impact of the initiative, saying, “Each year, more trauma-certified counselors will join the workforce, offering families and individuals a lifeline during their most vulnerable times.”
