Indiana has recently launched a significant new grant program aimed at expanding mental health services for youth throughout the state. The funding initiative will allow local mental health organizations to provide trauma-informed care and increase access to crucial support services for young people. With a growing mental health crisis among youth in the state, this new grant aims to help address the demand for mental health care, particularly for historically underrepresented communities.

WFYI news noted that in 2022, over a third of Indiana youth reported feeling sad or hopeless for two or more weeks, often leading them to stop engaging in usual activities. The situation has become even more concerning for vulnerable populations, with nearly 28% of Indiana children and nearly 45% of LGBTQ+ youth reporting serious thoughts of suicide. Nationally, the rise in suicide rates among Black youth aged 10-17 has been particularly alarming, with a 144% increase from 2007 to 2020. These statistics highlight the critical need for increased access to mental health care, particularly for youth.

Recognizing this urgent need, a new partnership has been formed to address the gap in youth mental health services. The Youth Mental Health Empowerment Program, a collaboration between MHS Serves, Indiana Minority Health Coalition, and Black Onyx Management, aims to support the expansion of existing mental health services across the state. The program’s focus will be on increasing public awareness, particularly in underserved areas, and providing funding to organizations to enhance their offerings.

The new grant program will provide funding of up to $80,000 per organization, which can be used for professional development training, technical assistance, and consulting services. This funding will support the expansion of critical services and help mental health organizations strengthen their capacity to meet the growing demand for youth mental health support.

Managed Health Services’ Interim President and CEO, Christina Hage, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “We recognize the demand for youth mental health services is a critical need for the communities in which our members live and work.” She further added, “By addressing this need by funding professional support, technical and programming resources, and public awareness, we continue our mission of transforming the health of the community we serve, one person at a time.”

Grant applications are now open and will close on February 20 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Local organizations interested in applying for funding can contact MHS Serves for more information or attend one of the information sessions on January 29 and February 7, both from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This grant represents a significant step toward addressing the mental health crisis among Indiana’s youth and ensuring that more young people have access to the resources they need to thrive.
