In a move aimed at strengthening the state's response to substance use disorders, Indiana has taken significant steps to expand its peer support workforce. Recognizing the importance of lived experience in the recovery process, the state is now covering the costs for training and certification for peer support professionals. These professionals play a critical role in helping individuals navigate the challenging path to recovery, using their personal experiences with substance use or mental health issues to connect with and support others in similar situations.

The WFYI newsite noted that the new initiative also marks a shift in the state’s approach to who can become a certified peer support professional. Previously, these roles were generally filled by individuals with direct experience of substance use disorders. However, the state has expanded eligibility to include family members of people with substance use disorders, recognizing the unique insight and support these individuals can offer. This expansion aims to grow the peer support network and improve the accessibility of these vital services across Indiana.

The program’s structure includes a comprehensive 48-hour training process that spans two weeks, during which participants learn essential skills such as setting ethical boundaries, addressing stigma, and interacting with supervisors. The curriculum, introduced earlier this year, aligns with national standards, ensuring that the training meets high-quality benchmarks. After completing the training, candidates must pass a proctored exam to become certified peer support professionals. The state covers both the training and exam costs, removing financial barriers for those interested in becoming certified, which had previously been an obstacle for many potential candidates.

Indiana has committed to training up to 100 new peer support professionals each month, with a growing focus on integrating these professionals into other areas of the state's health system. Niki Howenstine, recovery director for the Family and Social Services Administration’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction, emphasized that peer support workers are now a mandatory component of mobile crisis teams. These teams, which respond to mental health crises in communities across the state, now include certified peer support professionals to ensure those in crisis have access to someone who understands their experiences and can offer empathetic support.

The state’s efforts to expand peer support services are further bolstered by 20 regional recovery hubs, which ensure that every county in Indiana has access to recovery resources. These hubs are integrated into the state’s 24/7 support system through 211, a helpline that allows anyone in need of assistance to connect with a peer support worker by simply entering their zip code. This provides an immediate and accessible lifeline for individuals who may not have other avenues for help.

The initiative is a significant part of Indiana's broader strategy to address substance use recovery through community-based support and has already made strides in ensuring that peer support is available whenever it’s needed. By expanding the pool of certified professionals and offering comprehensive training, the state is not only strengthening its recovery infrastructure but also fostering a network of individuals who can provide the kind of guidance and encouragement that only someone with shared experience can offer.
