In a decisive late-night operation in Silver Spring, Maryland, Montgomery County Police officers seized a ghost gun equipped with an extended magazine, as well as a quantity of illegal drugs, leading to the arrest of the suspect involved. District 3 Commander Jason Cokinos shared details of the incident on Twitter, emphasizing the serious consequences of carrying illegal firearms and drugs with the message: “Gun 🔫+ Extended Magazine + Drugs 💊= Trip to jail.” He further noted that “every illegal gun seized is a prevented shooting and/or homicide,” underscoring the importance of removing these weapons from the streets.
According to The Moco Show, this arrest came as part of the efforts by the 3rd District Community Action Team (DCAT), which has been conducting proactive patrols along the New Hampshire Avenue corridor in Silver Spring to combat rising criminal activity in the area. During this traffic stop, officers uncovered a privately manufactured firearm (PMF), often referred to as a “ghost gun,” alongside an extended magazine and illegal drugs. Ghost guns, which lack serial numbers and are often assembled from online kits, are especially difficult for law enforcement to trace, presenting a unique and growing challenge in combating gun violence.
Ghost guns have been at the center of a national debate due to their inability to be traced and popularity among those who may wish to avoid background checks. Despite some states enacting stricter regulations on the sale and distribution of ghost gun parts, these weapons are increasingly present in criminal activities, highlighting a critical issue for law enforcement.
This incident illustrates the effectiveness of proactive policing in targeting high-risk areas to remove dangerous weapons and narcotics from the community. Officers noted that such traffic stops can be vital for uncovering larger criminal activities, such as illegal arms trafficking and drug distribution, that endanger local residents. By addressing minor traffic violations, officers can often make significant discoveries, helping to make neighborhoods safer.
The individual arrested during the stop has been transported to central processing and now faces charges for illegal firearm possession and drug-related offenses. As officers continue to combat the spread of untraceable ghost guns and narcotics, each successful seizure represents an important step in the ongoing fight to keep Montgomery County safe.
