New Hampshire appears to be making significant progress in combating the opioid and drug crisis that has plagued the state for years. While drug-related deaths remain a major issue, recent data shows a promising trend: fatal overdoses are on the decline. This is a small but positive step for a state that has seen more than 400 overdose deaths annually in recent years.

According to the state's chief medical examiner’s office, approximately 228 people died from drug overdoses in 2024, though 33 cases are still pending investigation. This marks the lowest number of fatal overdoses in a decade, suggesting that the efforts to address addiction in New Hampshire are starting to take effect.

According to the WCAX news site, local organizations such as the TLC Family Resource Center, with locations in Claremont and Lebanon, have played a significant role in the fight against drug addiction. By focusing on case management and helping individuals navigate recovery services, they are providing much-needed support to those struggling with addiction. Dan Wargo from TLC Family Resource explained that the quicker people can access help when they are ready, the higher the chances they have of overcoming their addiction.

Another contributing factor to the decline in overdoses is the widespread availability of Narcan, an overdose reversal drug. In Lebanon, for example, public access to Narcan has been a game changer. In 2021, paramedics responded to nearly 60 drug-related medical calls; this year, they’ve only had 10. Fire Chief Jim Wheatley credits this dramatic drop to the public’s ability to access Narcan at 10 sites across Lebanon, making it easier for anyone to help prevent a fatal overdose.

While these figures are encouraging, those working on the front lines of addiction recovery emphasize that there is still much more to be done. There is a need for increased outreach, more resources, and continued efforts to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction. But with each life saved and every statistic showing progress, New Hampshire is clearly moving in the right direction in its ongoing battle against the drug crisis.
