The NFL community and fans around the world are mourning the tragic loss of Minnesota Vikings cornerback Khyree Jackson, who was killed in a devastating car accident early Saturday morning. The promising young athlete, just 24 years old and drafted only two months ago, was one of three victims in the crash caused by a suspected drunk driver in Maryland.
The accident occurred at approximately 3:14 a.m. on northbound Route 4/Pennsylvania Avenue in Upper Marlboro, a small town in Prince George’s County, near Washington, D.C. According to Maryland State Police, 23-year-old Cori Clingman was driving at a high speed when she attempted to change lanes. This maneuver resulted in a collision with a Dodge Charger and a Chevrolet Impala.
The impact caused the Dodge Charger, which carried Jackson, to veer off the road and crash into several tree stumps before coming to a stop. Jackson, seated in the front passenger seat, was accompanied by the driver, 23-year-old Isaiah Hazel, and a rear passenger, 24-year-old Anthony Lytton, Jr. Tragically, all three occupants of the Charger succumbed to their injuries.
Remarkably, Clingman and the two other passengers in her vehicle were unharmed. Investigators suspect that alcohol played a significant role in the crash, and charges are pending as the investigation continues in consultation with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Jackson’s journey to the NFL was one of determination and hard work. He played college football for the Fort Scott Greyhounds, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and the Oregon Ducks. His talent and perseverance were recognized when he was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft on April 27.
