On Christmas Eve, Baton Rouge police arrested three men following a tense, hours-long standoff after responding to gunfire in the Elmer and Avenue F area. The suspects now face multiple gun and drug charges after an investigation into the incident.

According to the WAFB news site, the situation began just after midnight when a Baton Rouge police officer saw a man firing shots at an intersection. The suspect fled into a nearby house, with the officer following behind. Upon reaching the house, the officer saw two other men inside before the door was shut. The officer ran around to the back of the house, where he saw the suspect trying to escape again. The suspect reportedly ran back inside the house with a firearm, prompting police to call for backup.

The Baton Rouge Special Response Team (SRT) was deployed to help resolve the standoff. After several hours, the remaining two suspects exited the house without incident.

A search warrant was executed, leading to the discovery of four firearms, several boxes of ammunition, and nearly 35 grams of marijuana, packaged for sale.

The three suspects were arrested and face various charges related to guns and drugs. They are each facing charges of:

  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Illegal use of weapons
  • Obstruction of justice
  • Resisting an officer
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Possession with intent to distribute controlled substances
  • Illegal possession of firearms with controlled dangerous substances (CDS)

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges Baton Rouge faces with illegal drug trafficking and gun violence. The police response, which led to the peaceful surrender of the suspects, helped prevent further escalation, but the case serves as a reminder of the risks posed by the intersection of drug trafficking and firearm possession.
