This funding will bolster organizations like the Healing Warriors Program in the Eastern Plains and both the Front Range and Valley-Wide Health Systems in Southern Colorado.
The Black Chronicle news site reported that the U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, a Democrat from Colorado, expressed his gratitude for this funding, emphasizing the urgent need for mental health care access for veterans. “Our country’s veterans have sacrificed so much to keep us safe, and we must do more to ensure they have access to the mental health care they’ve earned,” Bennet stated. “I’m grateful Colorado will benefit from this investment, which will save lives and expand urgently needed support to veterans nationwide.”
Senator John Hickenlooper, also a Democrat from Colorado, echoed Bennet’s sentiments, highlighting the critical nature of this funding. “Over six thousand veterans die by suicide each year,” Hickenlooper remarked. “We won’t stand by as our veterans suffer in silence after serving their country. These grants will save lives.”
Both Senators played pivotal roles in the passage of the PACT Act in 2022, heralded as the largest expansion of veteran healthcare to date. This landmark legislation aims to improve access to healthcare services for veterans, particularly in the realm of mental health.
