Baton Rouge is marking November with a series of special events to honor veterans and their families throughout the city and East Baton Rouge Parish. These gatherings, initiatives, and celebrations aim to recognize the dedication of veterans, while also extending appreciation to the families and caregivers who support them every day. According to the WAFB 9 news site, Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, in partnership with the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Veterans Affairs and the Blue Star Moms, has outlined an engaging calendar of events for Veterans Month.
The month of recognition will kick off with the annual Mayor’s Veterans Breakfast on Friday, November 8, at 8:30 a.m. at the Main Library on Goodwood Boulevard. This breakfast brings together veterans, families, and community leaders for a shared moment of gratitude and reflection. The event is open to veterans and their supporters, fostering a communal space for conversations and connections among those who have served or have family in the military.
A notable highlight of Veterans Month will be the proclamation of the Hidden Heroes Initiative at the East Baton Rouge Metropolitan Council meeting on Wednesday, November 13, at 3 p.m. This initiative, in collaboration with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, emphasizes support for the families of veterans across the parish. The Hidden Heroes program seeks to recognize the unseen contributions of those who care for veterans, offering essential services and resources to aid them in their journey. By forming networks of support, Hidden Heroes acknowledges the unique challenges faced by caregivers and military families and aims to make a tangible impact on their lives.
As a visual tribute to local heroes, Veteran Tribute Banners will line the streets of downtown Baton Rouge, featuring veterans connected to families in East Baton Rouge. These banners stand as a daily reminder of the sacrifices veterans have made and the gratitude the community holds for them. Mayor Broome expressed the city’s pride in recognizing not only the service members themselves but also the families and caregivers who form the backbone of support for those who have served.
Additionally, this year’s Red Stick Veterans’ Week will be hosted by Army veteran and attorney Anthony Winters, bringing more events to the heart of Baton Rouge from November 8 to 16. The week includes a Veterans Celebration with students from Helix Community Schools at Rhorer Plaza on November 13, offering veterans an opportunity to share stories and experiences with the younger generation. Another event, “Smoke ’em if You Got ’em” on November 14, invites veterans and first responders to gather at Don Juan Cigars, creating a relaxing and convivial atmosphere for connection. Red Stick Veterans’ Week will culminate with a day of festivities at Southern University on Saturday, November 16, where a pregame concert, chili cook-off, and various activities will precede the Military and Veterans’ Appreciation Game.
The Mayor’s Advisory Council on Veterans Affairs plays a key role in coordinating these events and provides ongoing resources for veterans in East Baton Rouge Parish. Acting as a voice for local veterans, the council unites civic groups, veteran service organizations, and community partners. Its mission is to foster engagement, share resources, and advocate for the issues impacting veterans from all service branches. Veterans and residents seeking information on upcoming events or looking to connect with resources can reach out to the council via email at MayorsVeteranAffairs@brla.gov.
Through this extensive lineup of events, Baton Rouge demonstrates its commitment to honoring veterans and recognizing the individuals who support them behind the scenes. This Veterans Month serves as a heartfelt expression of appreciation and a reminder that Baton Rouge stands firmly with its military community.
