A drug trafficking ring in Baton Rouge has been shut down following a months-long investigation led by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office (EBRSO) Gang Intelligence and Enforcement Unit. The investigation, which focused on a group involved in significant drug distribution in the area, resulted in multiple arrests and the seizure of drugs, firearms, and other criminal materials.
According to Louisiana First News, the operation, which took place on March 6, spanned several months of surveillance and intelligence gathering, identifying several locations in Baton Rouge and Zachary used by the traffickers for drug distribution. With the assistance of EBRSO SWAT, the Baton Rouge Police Department’s Special Response Team (BRPD SRT), and other law enforcement agencies, authorities executed search warrants at five locations across the region.
The seized items included:
- 25 pounds of marijuana
- 11 oxycodone pills, 3 hydrocodone pills, and 2 tapentadol pills
- A ballistic bulletproof vest
- $18,038 in cash (pending seizure)
- Four firearms, including a stolen Glock 27
- Six digital scales (with cocaine residue)
- Plastic and vacuum bags
These findings point to a well-established operation involved in the distribution of various drugs, including marijuana and prescription opioids, as well as the illegal possession of firearms. Authorities also found evidence suggesting that drug sales were occurring in the presence of juveniles, adding to the seriousness of the charges.
The operation resulted in the arrest of several individuals, all facing a range of serious charges, including possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, possession of firearms with drugs, and unlawful possession of body armor. One individual was found to be out on bond for a previous firearms charge, while others admitted to drug sales and trafficking.
The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement officials have indicated that additional arrests or charges may follow as they continue to dismantle the criminal network. This operation highlights the growing efforts of local and federal agencies to tackle drug trafficking in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas, with a focus on reducing the availability of illicit substances and keeping communities safer.
The agencies involved in the investigation included EBRSO Narcotics, the BRPD Special Investigations Unit, the DEA Task Force, and the ATF Task Force in Baton Rouge. This bust represents a significant victory in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking, with authorities emphasizing their commitment to continuing this important work.
