It is well known that the veteran population is prone to developing mental illnesses and substance use disorders after they return from service to ordinary civilian life. The horrors that they’ve witnessed in battle often leave behind scars - physical, mental and emotional - that can take years to heal.

Avenues Recovery Center at Covington is a treatment center with a unique focus on providing top-tier substance abuse treatment for veterans. Features include a specialized veteran’s treatment track with medical, clinical, and holistic treatment plans tailored to the unique needs of this population, as well as a fully handicapped- accessible facility with assisted daily living (ADL) services for those who need it. Avenues has become the most-referred-to treatment center by the Louisiana regional office of Veteran Affairs.

On September 11, 2023, 22 years after the infamous 9/11 attacks, in a particularly fitting ceremony, nearly three dozen veterans – including both staff and alumni of Avenues – were presented with the Louisiana Veterans Honor Medal in recognition of their service. Alongside the medal, they received a letter from the Louisiana governor thanking them for sacrificing for a cause greater than themselves. In attendance at the ceremony were dignitaries such as Brigadier General Mike Cushman as well as Louisiana Secretary of Veteran Affairs Joey Strickland.

The ceremony took place in Avenues Recovery Center at Covington, and was a powerful reminder that no veteran need ever suffer alone. There can be hope and healing for every single person, regardless of their journey.

Our veteran heroes have cheerfully prepared to sacrifice everything they hold dear for the sake of our country, and it is a privilege to provide them with an opportunity for recovery in their time of greatest need.
