Anjenette Hasse, clinical director at Avenues Recovery Center at South Bend, chatted with ABC 57 news correspondent Anni Kate this week. She shared Avenues at South Bend’s vision, ethics, and procedures – and how they will be different than the shuttered Praxis by Landmark facility next door.
Praxis by Landmark Recovery of South Bend was forced to close its doors last year after 3 patient deaths and multiple reports of malpractice and abuse. It is now facing a lawsuit with over 30 plaintiffs, still pending in federal court.
After Avenues announced the projected opening of their new South Bend facility in the summer of 2024, the first question the community had was, “Will they be different?”
They will be, answers clinical director Ann Hasse, and they have a plan in place to achieve that goal. With clear vision, strong leadership, and slow but strategic growth, Avenues at South Bend is charting a path to success for both staff and clients.
The difference starts with their investment in and support of their staff members.
“We are different, and we will protect and equip our staff with all the necessary tools to stay safe,” shared Hasse. “Avenues wants to set a culture, so they want their staff to set a culture.”
One of the key elements of Avenues at South Bend’s growth plan is a “slow roll” – slow, staggered census growth – so as not to overburden staff or dilute the quality of care.
“Our census grows with what we feel comfortable with,” said Hasse.
In addition, she shares that Avenues at South Bend has strict contraband-prevention procedures in place as well. “Really tight search policies, round-the-clock perimeter searches, round-the-clock facility searches. That’s another way we’ve trained and empowered our staff to protect themselves, the facility, and most importantly the clients.”
Avenues Recovery Center at South Bend began accepting clients in November, but their official ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house will be held on January 8th, 2025.
